Product Ruggedness vs. Package Performance
Product fragility shock testing is the only means to determine if a product is over-packed or under-packed which can be a starting point for supply chain optimization. Westpak’s tests provide clients with valuable data enabling product packaging and supply chain optimization.
Unfortunately many products arriving at Westpak for initial testing are over-packaged by design! An optimized package system balances the ruggedness of the product with just enough packaging to provide protection throughout the supply chain. Westpak utilizes distribution testing inputs such as impact, compression, vibration, and altitude to evaluate a package system.
The figure displays the four packaging scenarios that packaging engineers deal with every day. The ultimate supply chain goal is to design a robust product while reducing packaging costs (Case 4).
- Case 1: Original product and package designed to meet the environment.
- Case 2: Package under-designed resulting in product damage.
- Case 3: Package over-designed resulting in waste and excessive costs. Costs not only include packaging materials cost, but also transportation and storage (supply chain costs).
- Case 4: Product improvement resulting in a more robust and higher quality product for the consumer. Reduced costs not only include packaging materials cost, but also transportation and storage (logistics costs).
