Cause: A Design Error or Inadequate Testing?
On June 28, 2015, an unmanned SpaceX Falcon 9 CRS-7 rocket on a mission to the International Space Station exploded moments after launch. NASA's incident report focuses on a metal strut supporting a helium bottle that failed which resulted in the rocket's complete destruction. Was a safety factor missed during the design process? Or was adequate testing not performed?

Case Study: Product Fragility Testing
Assessing a product's fragility using mechanical shock inputs provides designers with valuable data for the product and package design processes. In fact, a designer’s best efforts are compromised without this information. Three case studies are reviewed in WESTPAK’s webinar "Product Mechanical Shock and Fragility Testing Overview."

Thunderstorm: A Natural Particle Accelerator
A Kyoto University physicist has observed lightning-generated photonuclear reactions in thunderstorms. Accompanying the bright, visible lightning flash we're all familiar with are x-rays, gamma-rays, and others that have been detected by airborne detectors, ground-based observatories, and measured from space. Some of the energy available is sufficiently high enough to create nuclear fission resulting in the production of neutrons, unstable radioactive isotopes, and positrons.

Material Analysis: Creep Testing
For material testing, creep is the deformation of material occurring with time due to an externally applied, constant stress. Following the preparation and conditioning of test samples, WESTPAK evaluates package cushioning materials using a static load box fixture and other apparatus as described in ASTM D2221.
